'Conflict' misfires
By JOHN POWELL - Senior Editor, WHAM! Gaming

Scoping out the evil do'ers in 'Conflict: Global Terror'.

There is nothing worse than being all ready to sink your teeth into a fat, juicy steak and then with the first bite you realize it isn't cooked the way you like it. Back to the kitchen it goes.

Such is the case too with 'Conflict: Global Terror' but alas we have no kitchen to send back to.

From the box art to the trailers, 'Conflict' looks like a half decent tactical shoot-em up. Appearances can be deceiving though.

As the Delta Force CODEX Red Team, you are in control another of those hard-nosed, tobacco-chewing, glass-spitting, shoot-first-ask-questions-later military squads out to make the world a safer place by ridding the world of terrorist scum.

Go Joe! Sorry, I am not sure how that slipped out.

You are a busy bunch as well. Protecting senators from attack, blowing up illegal drug operations, assisting in escort duties and wiping out chemical weapons factories all around the globe. You sure rack up the frequent flier miles, that's for sure.

To assist you in fragging the holy hell out of the opposition, you have the usual weapons at your disposal like pistols, assault rifles, SMGs, LMGs, sniper rifles, shotguns, night vision and thermal vision goggles to outfit your squad members based on their specialized skills.

If you elect to, you can either control one character and issue orders to the others as the squad leader or switch between them on the fly. In many circumstances though, you don't have that liberty as the game sticks you in situations where in order to survive, you must jump back and forth because your squad is in different locations. There are instances in which there will be two members located on a street level and two on top of a building. Flipping around from one gun battle to another as they rage on in your absence can be one big multi-tasking nightmare that engenders more ill-will and dissatisfaction than good times. Not fun. Not fun at all.

Your squad members and the adversaries you engage aren't that bright either. More often than not, if told to follow you and fire at will, your team mates will ace a few obstacles before they inevitably get mowed into hamburger. They are especially dim-witted when surprised while walking into a room or up a flight of stairs. While they do run away from enemy grenades, they do not step out of the way of friendly fire, except for grenades. Although you can heal them and miraculously bring them back to fighting form if you are carrying some health packs, you almost wish you could leave them for maggots and earthworms to dine on for being so darn dense. It would serve them right.

Your foes aren't much better either. Their tactics consist of weaving around and doing that Muhammad Ali shuffle or taking cover even when targeted from a distance. It is rare that you can surprise any of them as it seems they all must have that zany spider-sense imbedded in their A.I. Countless levels have alarm systems too so even if you do take two or three tangos down, the others will sound a warning and reinforcements will arrive guns a blazing. Not fun. Not fun at all.

If all that wasn't enough there are no auto save checkpoints and you are limited to the amount of games you can save. Not fun. Not fun at all.

If 'Conflict: Global Terror' had been released ten years ago, it would've made a big splash but nowadays the market is flooded with far superior tactical shooters to choose from. There are some redeeming qualities to this game, however, like that unfinished steak; it urgently needs some more time on the grill. Lots of time and some more seasoning wouldn't hurt either.
